President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that some members of the National Assembly are one of the people sponsoring Nigerian separatists.
The President made the statement during a broadcast on Friday to celebrate Nigeria’ s 61st anniversary of independence.
Buhari announced that some of the founders of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, and Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba nation agitator, have been identified.
He went on to say that a serving member of the National Assembly had been recognized as one of the country’ s secessionists.
His statement reads, ” The arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho, two separatists demanding the formation of independent countries from Nigeria shows high- profile funders.
He stated further that his government is after the funders, claiming that the sponsors had abandoned their leadership responsibilities for what he called selfishness and greedy.
The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, as well as the ongoing investigations, have revealed certain high- profile funders behind these individuals, ” the President said.
” We are investigating these funders aggressively, including one who has been recognized as a member of the National Assembly. This person abandoned their national leadership responsibilities for personal benefit.
” Instead of preaching unity, they support and mislead our youth into committing illegal acts that result in the tragic and unnecessary loss of life and property. “
The President stated that Nigeria belongs to all of us and that its unity cannot be compromised, adding that the country’ s ” ultimate achievement” can only be realized if ” we all come together with a single aim of peace and prosperity for our country. “
” We will continue to work on solutions that are based on the conversation to resolve legitimate issues. But we will continue to take firm action against separatist agitators and their backers who pose a threat to our national security, ” he stated.
