Professor Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate, has called on the government of the Republic of Benin to release Sunday Adeyemo, who is also known as Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba Nation agitator, to continue his journey.
The Noble Laureate, who also spoke with a Journalist in Lagos on Friday during an interactive session which was titled, ” Sanctions on the loose: Chasing the gnat with a sledgehammer, ” the elder statesman said the secessionist did not commit any crime against Nigeria” .
It was learnt that the home of Sunday Igboho in Ibadan, Oyo State, was raided by Men of the Department of State Services on the 1st of July 2021, killing two and arresting 12 of his aides.
The Yoruba Nation agitator later fled to the Republic of Benin where he was arrested alongside his wife on the 19th of July 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjehoun Airport in Cotonou on their way to Germany.
It was gathered that Ropo, his wife was released and Sunday Igboho is facing illegal migration charges in Benin Republic and also seeking asylum to evade the Federal Government request for his extradition to face allegations of stockpiling arms which he had denied.
Sunday Igboho’ s offence was resisting tyranny of Fulani herdsmen against the people of Oyo state, he said.
Soyinka said, ” I refuse to believe that Igboho committed any crime other than inciting against the Fulani tyranny on his people. He has peacefully demonstrated his position”
I cannot consider that to be decided as a crime. Agitating for secession is not a criminal act as long as it is done peacefully. You don’ t have to criminalise that.
