A 34- year- old widow, Chioma Asomugha, from Ubahuekem, Ihiala area of Anambra State, has raised an alarm that her in- laws are forcing her to drink the water used to bathe the corpse of her late husband.
Mrs. Chioma, who confirmed the report in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Awka, alleged that the brothers of her late husband, Charles, said she had to drink the water to prove that she was not responsible for her husband’ s death, but she refused to do so.
Mrs. Chioma said before his death, she and her late husband lived peacefully in Ojo area of Lagos.
” ” I have four children with my late husband and we lived in Ajangbadi, Ojo area of Lagos before he died.
” The burial is scheduled for Monday, June 14, but when we were returning home for the burial, my husband’ s relatives forced me out of the marital home.
They insisted that I must drink the water used to bathe my late husband’ s body before I will be allowed into the house, ” she said.
Mrs. Chioma said she had taken the matter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Awka as well as her Oraifite village to resolve the matter.
Laura Ugwuanyi, the NHRC coordinator in Anambra, confirmed the report, describing it as disgusting.
She said efforts made to resolve the matter did not yield positive results as the family members were uncooperative.
A community leader in the area, Gerald Nnabugwu, told NAN that the community leaders were investigating the matter.
The state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, also promised to investigate the matter.
When contacted, Okey Chukwu, the Ubahuekem community chairman, said he was in a meeting and promised to call back, but at the time of this report, his phone was switched off.
